Yes, it's a new post.
Dominic here. I'll be travelling north to pig farm country to visit Paul next weekend to (1) watch the Oscars in Paul's most excellent home theater, (2) make a new podcast -- or videocast -- with Paul, and (3) play lots of Halo.
Actually, we better not play Halo as it's a huge timesuck.
Sorry there haven't been any new podcasts lately. We've had a combination of technical difficulties and scheduling conflicts. Those should be cleared up soon, and we will take advantage of being together to make at least a quick podcast, although I've got my sights set on a nice high-def videocast, courtesy of Paul!
As for the Oscars, be sure to send your predictions to dorkcast@gmail.com. We'll be sitting there with our jujubes and fresh made caramel popcorn seeing who guessed better than us.
In the meantime, here's a couple tidbits for you all:
1. NightWatch has opened in New York, and it's a crazy ride. www.moviephone.com said the running time was 3:38, and so I prepped my wife and friends who went with me to expect a four hour russian vampire movie. When 1:30 had elapsed, and it felt like the movie was coming to a head, I leaned over to my buddy and said, "It's not even half way over!" But, alas, moviephone did me wrong, and it turns out that NightWatch is only 1:40 or so long. But it was lots of fun while it lasted, and I'm definitely ready to buy my tickets to the two sequels, DayWatch and DuskWatch, when they come out.
2. Silent Hill, the PlayStation game (yes, I know it's on other platforms, but Sony had it first!), is being made into a movie. I'm creeped out already.
See you soon.
Dominic

West Chazy pig farm just has a certain ring to it.
Paul, I got NIGHT WATCH on DVD last year from www.russiandvd.com. It's an import from Russia with English subtitles. All of the information on the disc and packaging is in Russian so I had to guess where "play movie" was on the disc and I have no idea what the packaging says. I searched around the disc and it has the usual features...cast and crew bios, teasers and a preview of NIGHT WATCH, previews for other Russian films and a preview of DOCTOR ZHIVAGO with Sam Neil and Keira Knightly! The subtitles are the kind you would find in any foreign film...not the dynamic kind that I've read about in the reviews of the movie.
I liked the film and I'm glad that Dominic did, too. It makes you wonder about the negative reviews it has received. I often feel that they don't match reviewers to films in a way that allows the consumer to get determine whether or not they should go see it.
All too often they seem to get reviewers for horror/sci-fi/fantasy/comic book movies who really aren't into those genres. But, they never seem to find someone from "Wizard" magazine or "Fangoria" to review the latest Nora Ephron film. You would think that it would only be fair. If a reviewer, like Michael Medved who tends to favor family friendly films, reviews the latest slashfest he isn't really going to give it a fair review. Just like if I were to review a chick flick. I may be able to sit through it and appreciate it on it's merit but it's not really my pint of ale.
Wish I could be there tomorrow! I've yet to experience the magic that is HALO but I have a friend down here to almost treats it like a religion! I'll be knocking down a few Blues here and I'll get some KFC or a pizza so I can try to capture some of the magic. If something really ridiculous happens during the kiss-ass fest expect a "WTF was that?!" call from me!
Hey Dominic...I'm looking forward to seeing SILENT HILL on the screen, too! I have the PS2 game and it scared the crap out of me!!!
Have you played any of the FATAL FRAME games? My wife got me the first one for Xmas when it came out after seeing the cast of "X Play" call it the "scariest game of the year". Later that night I sat back with a Blue and started playing it. For one thing, the sound is incredible! You hear voices coming in and out...whispers in the dark...and the game itself is very dark...it's hard to see anything...and then...ghosts start popping up out of nowhere...either just walking by or you see them in reflections or they are down the hallway...and then some start attacking you! I had to pause the game and turn on the lights! I still play it...just in the daytime.
I've heard that FATAL FRAME may be made into a film. If they are able to capture the mood and tone of the game it will be one of the most frightening films of all time!
